The 2010 White Hat Rally was an organised motor rally raising money for ChildLine, and was certainly a trip to remember! We were shaken but not stirred as we visited some of the sites and experienced the thrills that made up a true James Bond adventure. Based loosely (OK, very loosely) on the escapades of James in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the rally provided a chance to try out dodgy accents and enjoy a Vodka Martini or two.
The charity event took place in late September, our route taking us from Leeds to the official start in France, on through Switzerland, and into Italy with the final destination being the fabulous city of Venice four days later. The rally took in some stunning scenery, and there were many Bond film-themed challenges along the way and cryptic clues to unravel. We completed the gruelling drive in an “Old Banger” – All in the spirit of raising money for ChildLine.
Travelling through some of the most stunning locations and awesome roads in Europe, along with frequent breakdowns, the event provided a stimulating drive! But it’s not just about being behind the wheel…….we needed a huge sense of adventure and humour, and luck(!) as we attempted to complete the film-themed challenges whilte keeping the car running.
We visited several of the most famous film settings including Blofeld's mountain lair from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", the Dam where Bond performed the world's highest bungee jump in "Goldeneye", and the mountain passes where Goldfinger is chased in the DB5 - we were chased by a snow plough!
During the trip there was also the chance to visit the famous revolving restaurant at Piz Gloria - in a blizzard! And time to enjoy the view across the mountains while waiting for the snow plough!! Driving on some of Europe's finest (!) roads we did eventually reach the finish in the fabulous city of Venice, and the water-ways from the film “Casino Royale”.
